Scientific Name
Anthurium vittarifolium (meaning “strap-leaved”, referring to its long, narrow foliage)
Common Name
Strap Leaf Anthurium
Origin
Native to tropical regions of Colombia and surrounding areas in South America, where it grows as an epiphyte in humid rainforest environments
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Lower light is tolerated but may slow growth and reduce leaf length
Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter while maintaining some moisture
Humidity
Thrives in higher humidity. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, or near a humidifier. A pebble tray can help in drier homes
Soil
Use a loose, chunky aroid mix with bark, perlite, and organic matter to ensure good drainage and airflow around the roots
Food
Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertiliser. Reduce feeding in winter
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–28°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and keep away from cold drafts
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children
Sprouts Top Tips
Let it hang or place it high up. Giving the leaves space to trail naturally not only looks better but also helps prevent kinks or damage as they grow longer.
